A Girl Walks Into a Bar…

When you ask yours friends how they met their current main squeeze you always get the same answer: work, restaurant, out and about. But, you never get “we met at ____________ (your local bar).” Why is it so socially unacceptable to meet your signficant other at a bar? I mean you yourself are at that bar for social hour. Also, your friends are all at that same bar. All that person wanted to do was go out with his/her friends to be social. So, why can’t you meet that special person at a bar?

It is funny, I have never seen the problem with meeting someone at a bar. I mean you go out to meet new people and be social. So you strike up a conversation with someone and they may be that next special someone. I just can’t wrap my head around why a bar it not acknowledged as a nice place to meet someone.

Bars house lots of different types of people and they house different types of people. They are full of new opportunities to meet new people and to catch up with familiar places. So, what I’m trying to get at is that meeting someone at a bar isn’t a bad thing. And I’m pretty sure most of your friends are lying to you when they state where they met their new person!

Happy drinking,

2012 Work Style

Do you ever find yourself buying more work clothes than clothes to wear out when you grab drinks? Well, I tend to do that and work clothes are not cheap! I would have to say that my work style is very young and hip. I don’t like pant suits. I’m sorry, if you are under 40 you need to stay away from a matching blazer and pants, let alone a pencil skirt and a blazer! For the love of god ladies, we are not in the 80s! Work style has changed drastically, you can go for a nice mens wear look: Blazer, silk blouse, skinny cigarette pants and flats. Or you can go for a fitted sheath dress with a nice pair of pumps and chunky jewelry. Below is an image of some of my favorite pieces at the moment. I will list them below the image so you can find and buy online!

1. Steve Madden Unityy Pump in Blush or Black Suede. extremely comfy and not too high of a heel

2. Longchamp Le Pilage Tote in Black. Make sure you get the long handles and the larger size so you can fit your laptop or iPad in it.

3. Black Pashmina. Perfect for when it may be cold outside and inside the office. It also works great for a late night wrap.

4. Zara Satin Black Blazer. This blazer is the perfect long length for either a sheath dress or skinny pants.

5. Jcrew No. 2 Pencil Skirt. This skirt comes in every color. What is great about Jcrew skirts is that they come in petite, regular or tall and they fit amazing.

6. Banana Republic Sofia Lightweight wool dress. This dress hits at the perfect length on the legs and the short puffed sleeves make it feminine.

7. Jcrew Talitha Blouse. You always need to have a couple long and short sleeve silk blouses in basic colors.

8. Zara Ponte Di Roma Knit Blazer in Brown. This blazer can be worn for work or play and it is so soft.

9. Jcrew Origami Sheath Dress in Charcoal or Red. Origami is in and it makes a simple sheath dress really stand out. Perfect for day or night.

10. Jcrew Jenna’s V-Neck Cardigan. Everyone needs a couple different colored cardigans and you can only wear a blazer with so many outfits. Switch it up and throw on a cardigan.

11. Jcrew Cafe Capri in any color (black and tan a must). Besides the No. 2 pencil skirt, I highly recommend these pants. They fit great and they are the perfect cut. I don’t like typical work slacks. I like skinny legged pants with flats or pumps.

Random Thoughts for 2011

Vintage Woman WritingI’m the type of person who is constantly taking mental notes and writing ideas down on whatever medium I can find. If you were to look in my wallet/purse, you would find a bunch of papers, receipts, etc..with quotes and ideas scribbled on. I have a restless mind.

As part of my 2011 reflection and cleanse, I wanted to share some tidbits. Here goes:

  1. I really want a Corgi
  2. How much money does Victoria’s Secret spend on printing the same catalog and mailing it 150 times to my house?
  3. The Orange County restaurant scene is booming. Loads of new spots to indulge and be seen, especially this place
  4. My neighbor is ALWAYS walking around outside on his phone. I wonder if he’s talking to his girlfriend, and if his wife inside the house is starting to get suspicious.
  5. Is my Type really the best thing for me?
  6. The Lakers are gonna win the championship this season (early 2011). Nevermind, I’m still a loyal fan though (Dec. 2011)
  7. I need to see a podiatrist soon.
  8. This new hot pink lipstick is making me look like a confused Barbie. And not sure if it jives with my olive skin  (pics soon!)
  9. Looks like Coco is starting to take my advice!
  10. I’m starting to dress older, not in a bad way though. But I do miss wearing hoodies and high-tops.
  11. POP, where have you been all my life?

2011 is done.kaput.closed.over. Whatever the case, it went by peculiarly fast for me. This year, I promise to move slower, stop at every view and just breathe. 2012 will be filled with purpose and a fresh sense of serious optimism. It will be an action year. I can already feel it. And you are more than welcome to watch.

Love, Valenz

New Year, New Nail Color

Happy New Year! Valenz and I are so excited for 2012. We are really hoping that great things come your way and this year is a great chapter in your life. Now each month I would like to review my favorite nail color for the month. For January I will be reviewing two colors.

1. Sally Hansen Salon Effects in 470 Lust-Rous. This amazing black with glitter is perfect for any party or night out you may be attending in January 2012. It is the perfect winter color for your nails. The amazing thing about Salon Effects is that they are fast to apply, easy to apply and they last for about 2 weeks. I add a top coat of clear on after I put them on. You can find these at your local CVS pharmacy or any drug store.

2. OPI’s French Quarter for Your Thoughts. It is a grey neutral color. I absolutely love it. Right now it is on my toes and it is the perfect color for winter. You can buy OPI nail color at any Planet Beauty or beauty supply store!

Bring on 2012 and just let everything go!

Splinteredheart's "looking out the window" favorite picturesWho is ready to say good-bye to 2011?  I mean don’t get me wrong, 2011 was a great year: I still have a great job, amazing friends and family and will start Grad School in January 2012. But, I feel like it wasn’t that great of a year. For the 3rd year running I was single. Yes I went on a couple dates and a few I thought might have some potential. But, because of going on these dates and being open to dating I caught the relationship bug. I didn’t have that in 2010 because I didn’t want to be in any type of relationship. I’m not broken-hearted at all, I am just craving being in a relationship.

For 2012, I would like to be in a relationship. I really don’t think I can do 4 years strait of no relationships. It gets a little boring. But, besides of being in a relationship, I wonder what else I can achieve in 2012. It is fun to look back at the year past and see what you achieved, what you could have improved on and maybe things you want to completely forget! Looking forward to 2012, I can think to myself okay a new year, new you. Is wanting to be in a relationship too much to ask for in the upcoming year? But, this can’t be a New Year’s resolution because lets be honest you have no control over if this happens.

2012 will be all about fait for me. I am placing the new year in the hands of fait. This is hard to grasp as I like to have control over my destiny. But, to grow and become stronger you have to let go and see what happens. 2012 will be me letting go and going with the tide. Try new things, be open, saying “yes” to everything!

Now I have been listening to this song non-stop that last few days and think my new anthem for 2012 will be “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.” Enjoy this amazing song by Kelly Clarkson: (click the image to view)

typing my ‘type’

I can’t seem to get away from writing about dating and all the morsels that fall under it’s colorful umbrella. I’m a young, single, decent-looking (as one arrogant SOB would say) woman in the dating scene for what feels like an eternity…and I think I’m quite funny too. So can you really blame me? Meeting new people, exploring unfamiliar places, and experiencing life through multiple angles – all of it sparks  my soul and drives me to reach even further, dig even deeper. I adore the freedom of my single life but also look back and am satisfied, almost amused, by memories of my commited-serious-relationship-past. Surely all of these form the foundation and continuously evolving perception of the famliar favorite first date/girl talk/blogging topic – What is Your Type?

Dolce Gabbana 2011 Mens Ad Now I’m gonna try my best to articulate this, as it is nearly impossible to fit all the intricacies of what you are looking for in a soulmate – someone who you will spend every single waking moment of the rest of your life with. Someone who will see your finances, raise your children, make dinner with you. To start, let’s focus on the superficial qualities – those that catch your wandering eye, that makes you wonder what it looks like underneath those pants.  My type has to be fit, at least 5’9″, under 40. He has to have nice fitting pants and clean shoes. A little facial hair doesn’t hurt either.  No piercings or visible tattoos, honest eyes and a warm smile. There’s a certain stance that I’m drawn to, a sort of swagger that exudes confidence and even borderline arrogance. A certain comfort in his own skin. I see all that.

Sure, I’ve dated outside my type. And I’ve done it quite a bit. I often surprise myself at the types of people I’m drawn to. But one thing is consistent across everything – I am attracted to personality and success. A man who can sink in to ANY environment and nail it,  who can immediately electrify a room while maintaining a sense of mystery and who can make me laugh so hard that I have to step outside to catch my breath.  As much as I value my own career and successes, and as much as I applaud the modern reality of women doing it all for themselves, I still want a partner who will challenge me and still make me feel like I’m being taken care of.

I definitely have a type. I think we all do. And as it would be nice to hit every single criteria of this ‘type’, I have to admit that some qualities have heavier weight and are far superior than others. I’ll let you guess which ones.

Cheers! Valenz

New Years Eve

New Years Eve KissWith Christmas behind us and the New Year fastly approaching, who has time to plan out what they are doing for New Years Eve? I mean come on, you have to find the dress, the shoes, get your hair and makeup done. But, for me who is this all for? Is it for myself or am I secretly thinking that I am going to meet some guy out, talk the whole night sipping expensive champagne and then when the clock strikes 12 we kiss and sparks fly. Yeah, hold on reality check please!

I have never had a New Years kiss. Yes, I have had Boyfriends during this fabulous time of year, but for some reason we have never been able to hang out. As females, do we put too much pressure on ourselves to have a New Years kiss? What is the significance of a New Years kiss? As the clock starts to click down for that last-minute, and you look around to see all the couples starting to get close to each other you start to realize, “shit I’m going to start off the New Year once again single!” But, why should this be a bad thing? Why is it the norm when the New Year rings in that everyone has to give someone a kiss? When did this horrible tradition come into play?

Yes, I may have no idea if I will have a New Years kiss this year, but I am okay with this. Maybe fait will take a turn in my favor and bring someone my way when the clock starts to tick down. I have the dress, I have the shoes, my hair and makeup will be done (need to save some money, doing this step myself), I will be ready for whatever comes my way. There is a potential new love interest, we will call him hipster 2.0, we may meet up so keep your fingers crossed!

Happy New Year little ones! I hope you find your New Years kiss…

xoxo, Coco

Excuse Me Sir, I Think You Dropped Your Balls.

Often times I find myself out in not-so-fun situations. The types of moments when the thought of stabbing your eye with a pen seems like the normal thing to do. Or the memory of last weekend’s carpet cleaning session makes you salivate in joy.  When the mundane, and even mind-numbing activities begin to invade your mental space – you know you are in bad company, and if that company is a boy and within a ‘date’ setting, you’re fucked.

I had drinks with a friend of mine, he had just gotten out of a long-term relationship and had been single for 9 months (and no, I am NOT interested) He’s average-ly good looking, dresses ok, but has an incredible personality and sense of humor.  In my book, he should be able to bag most women he sets his focus on. Too bad he likes bitches more than Fido does. He shows a little bit of interest in these meat-eating ravenous women and within 10 seconds they are sitting on his lap buying him shots of Patron. Sure, many of them are sexy, bursting with energy and confidence, but after the initial shock of introductions, etc – they are just lunatics with lavender smelling hair and painted on dresses. So these women continue to walk all over my poor friend. He compromises his schedule, spends crazy money on dinner/drinks, and loses the word “no” in his vocabulary.  He gets jerked around, slapped in the face, asked to pick up their relatives at the airport and he does it. And does it with a half smile.  So I ask him, “Why do you keep walking into the fire” which he replies “I like strong personalities” when he should have really said “I like to shove my balls as far up my own as I can.”

So I guess opposites really do attract? Natures way of balancing the soft and the hard, the naughty and nice, the fire and the ice.

My last serious relationship challenged this theory – every single freaking day of the years and years long ordeal. We were both fire – not campfire, but more like blazing infernos, sea of flames, pyro magnificence. Without boring you with the details, you can assume that our relationship eventually exploded, both leaving us burned, but tougher (and wiser) nonetheless.

Fast forward to today, December 23,2011, 2 days before Christmas. There are a few people in my life – some naughty, some nice. But I will tell you that I much too often find myself sitting across a puppy-like boy with his tail between his legs.  Painfully bored and ready to overdose on the complimentary butter. Is nature’s theory trying to shove itself down my throat? So does that mean I’M THE BITCH? And all these sad boys toxically attracted to my ways?

Absolutely not. Though I know the dashing, outspoken, life-of-the-party, borderline narcissist is not exactly for me, and I know that sometimes I need a quiet moment with the man who will just say ‘yes’ without consequence –  I am positive that I will find the one who is the perfect balance of all the above. And I will happily wait til’ I find it.

Love,VALENZ

p.s. notice my slow introduction of curse words. Congrats! That means I’m getting comfortable with you.

Facebook Etiquette

As I have been trying to cleanse myself of hipster, I started to do what everyone does but no one talks about. I have been Facebook stalking him. Now come on, you know you do too. How can you not? You want to see what that person is up to, and just maybe you might coincidently “run into them” at that one bar. You as well start: checking into more places, posting more pictures, and update your status more frequently. Facebook stalking is something that everyone does. Come on, there is no way for anyone to know how often you look at someones profile.

Now, I mentioned that I was trying to cleanse myself of him. And how would I be able to do that when I can easily find out what he is up to and where he will be. I had already deleted his phone number, but on Facebook you have access to his phone number. I needed to just delete him from Facebook. Now in a society where we are connected in so many ways, what is immature when is comes to disconnecting someone from your life? I didn’t want to know if he was in town, or if he was on a date with another girl. As well, I didn’t want him looking at me and seeing what I was up to. I needed to remove the toxins from my cyber connections. But, is it immature to delete someone from Facebook?

I would say no if you recently became friends. If it was someone who was in your life for  a long time and then you guys started to get into a fight. You need to sometimes get rid of the toxins that are in your life. And we build those toxins fast with social media. Where you information is public, and you can secretly poison yourself by continuing to have someone in your life that you want to get rid of.

Well, with hipster I did delete him. Yes, from time to time I wish I could go and look at his profile, but it will go away faster than if I would have left us connected. He didn’t need to be in my life. I gave him a chance and he was the one that wasnt interested. Funny thing is the next morning after I deleted him I received two missed calls at 7:30 am (yes, I recognize his phone number). Coincidence or not? I will let you be the judge!

POP!

Here at CoCoValenz we like to stay on top of  our physical state – you know, match the insides with our outsides or something like that. We are always on the lookout for new and exhilirating ways to get fit and have tried many different programs: from the boring, the nearly impossible, and the downright silly…we’ve tried them all. For the sake of this post, and your time (since I know you have better things lined up -catching up on Judge Judy, coupon clipping, drinking soda, etc..) let’s hover the magnifying glass on our newest addiction: POP PHYSIQUE.

Pop Physique Poses

Do you remember those old Jane Fonda exercise routines? The ones that are set against an electro synthesized soundtrack. Then there’s the sweat, purple leg warmers, thong unitards and Aquanet – ahh yes, burn baby burn.

Pop Physique is the modern, hispter take on this old school classic. It is a combination of pilates, yoga, cardio barre, and ballet. The music consists of an eclectic mix – everything from Florence and the Machine to Kid Cudi. It almost feels like you’re working out inside an Urban Outfitters. The moves are challenging and you’re definitely feeling the burn 20 minutes in to the 60 minute session. And the atmosphere and the flow is so good that the session is over before you can even say “Richard Simmons!” Ladies, you want a body like Misty Copeland, you know what to do.

So now you’ll know where to stalk, er, find us. There’s a new studio inside the Camp in Costa Mesa. If we’re not there sexually harassing the salesmen, we’re off breaking a sweat and getting sexy at POP.
